COVID-19 and the C4DC FY21 Education Budget Recommendations
March 12, 2020
These are uncertain times. We appreciate and applaud the Council’s efforts to respond urgently to the threat COVID-19 poses to the residents of DC. With continued clear guidance and leadership from the Mayor and the Council we will work to support and protect each other, particularly our most vulnerable.
We know that our leadership is wrestling with the health crisis and its significant financial implications. We understand that it will be challenging to devote the time and care needed on the FY21 Budget for everyone—and yet it must be done.
It is in this spirit that we offer the Coalition for DC Public Schools and Communities (C4DC) statement on the FY21 DCPS Education Budget. It is a roadmap for investing in equity, excellence and growth for our DCPS public school system of right. It reflects our belief that investing in DCPS is fiscally prudent and promises greater equity and excellence for families with school-age children.
The Mayor’s FY21 Budget release has been postponed until May. All Council Budget hearings have been cancelled until further notice as our city responsibly responds to the threat that the Corona Virus poses to everyone’s health. Council members are working off site and available by email or phone. While the revenue projections will be down, these documents set out important priorities we can communicate.
The C4DC proposal for DCPS school budget support is posted here along with an updated budget tool and analysis. We look forward to having more conversations on these priorities.
